Our Car hates Cold Weather!

Somewhere between -30 and -40 the tires on the car start to freeze. So when you start driving down the road you have what they call square tires and your car bounces like your driving over tree stumps (don't ask how i know what that feels like!). After a few hundred or thousand yards friction starts to heat up the grease in the axles so your car can roll better and your tires and then they go back to normal! We have put in a batter heater, block heater, and oil pan heater and the car still doesn't sound very good when it starts, even after it has sat under a blanket and tarp to try to keep some heat it.

For those of you who aren't up on technology

You can click on the pictures to view them full size.

Some more pictures

This is a picture of the Tok River and the Tok Cutoff Highway. I took this picture while we were climbing a mountian.

This is North Country Clinic, it is where Charity goes for her prenatal visits when we don't drive all the way into anchorage. Its just a one room log cabin.

This is a picture of the first wolf I've ever seen. It looked like a coyote at first because of the similar color. I didn't get a very good picture because he didn't stay around too long.

Pictures from Camp

Shen Camp Explorer Camp
Charity and I at Camp
Here are several pictures of the icecream drop from Shen Bible Camp.

The first icecream drop I ducked early because the zoom lens on the camera made it look like the plane was getting ready to hit me. So for the second icecream drop I got further down the beach to take some pictures and I tried not to duck even though the plane appeared very close through the camera lens. The only problem was the pilot came alot closer to the beach on the second icecream drop and the wing of the plane was only a few feet above my head when he flew by. The tires of the plane were only about 5 feet off the ground... about level with my chest!

We had a few days of rain the second week of camp and there was a nice sunset after one of the storms.

Pictures from the Summer

Here are some pictures from the summer. We didn't get many pictures of us and our kids at VBS's because there were only three or four of us with anywhere from 6 - 35 kids. We couldn't get into Canada right away because they wanted us to get working papers even though we didn't need them. So we turned back for the night and camped about 3 miles from Canada Customs. On the way back to camp there was a Grizzly Bear eating grass on the side of the road. He was still there in the morning on the way back to customs. It was neat to see the Lord answer our prayers to see a bear by keeping us from getting through customs right away.

While we were in Beaver Creek it rained almost everyday for a little while. We saw several rainbows and this is a picture of the brightest one we saw with the Beaver Community Center in the foreground.
Here is a picture of Dawson City, YT from the Dome Overlook.

We saw several foxes and a yearling Grizzly Bear close to Dawson City on the Top of the World Highway. Anne got out of the truck to take a picture of the small grizz and I tried to get her to get back in... she didn't listen so I got out and stood next to her so I wouldn't feel bad if it decided to attack her while we were all sitting in the truck. The bear got our scent and growled at us and bluff charged a few steps. After that I didn't have to convince Anne to get back into the truck.

More Pictures from the drive up

Here is some neat red bluffs in wyoming that we drove by while we were looking for a state forest road to camp by. When we found the state forest road it was still closed for the winter so we had to drive around to the other end to find a camping spot out of the snow.

Here are some pictures of different animals we saw on the way up.

Pictures from our drive to Alaska

Here are some pictures from our drive to Alaska. This is along a highway in Wyoming, I like the way the clouds were floating in such a deep blue sky.
I took the picture of this water fall in Yellowstone. It was really overcast and foggy the day we drove through.
Here is one of our make-shift one night camps along the AlCan Highway.
Here is the Sunset across the lake from camp at around 11pm.
This is Lake Kluane on May 31st, the last day of our trek from Pennslyvania to Alaska.

This is another picture of Lake Kluane on June 23rd while we were enroute to Whitehorse and Marsh Lake Bible Camp.

The Mountain Family

My family-in-Law is doing some good hunting. We're jealous that we are in Alaska and can't hunt whitetails and turkeys. Rog and Violet went with Bubba and shot a squirel; Rog was really happy as you can see.

Susan went hunting with Curt the other day and shot a big turkey. Rog is in the picture with Curt's small (did it just hatch?) turkey. [( This is Curt's reply to my statement about his Cornish Game Hen. I figured I'd put his reply in here so that you readers could get the other side of the story)... Luke Skytographer and Charity Pear, [in reference to the photos and Charity’s impending shape],
Thank goodness that you left the Mountain. There is now ample game for the Learns and Brennans to hunt.

I am looking for the name of a reputable Eskimo Law firm that will assist me in suing you and the Bible Institute for your posting of derogatory comments about the trophy turkey I recently harvested under adverse conditions (under the heavy-handed direction of one Bubba Learn who walks too fast in the dark, fails to provide Kool-Aide for her clients, scolds said clients for removing their fogged over eyeglasses, fails to provide bathroom breaks prior to shooting hours, and berates clients for shooting adolescent game birds).

If you fail to provide me with the information, I can only hope that your auto tires remain square, even throughout the summer. And may the black flies leave the Caribou herds in late May to set up housekeeping on your front porch. Perhaps a volcano will erupt to fill Skyphotographer’s favorite trout lake with 40 feet of caustic ash.

Hey, I like your site. And good luck up there.
Take Care,
Curt

Roger shot a nice 8 pt this year with his longbow. I'm not sure exactly how big it is... but its a pretty nice one.

Brrrrr....

Well its been a while since we've posted anything. We've been quite busy with work and other activities. Plus we were staying at someone's place and didn't want to tie up thier phone line by being on the internet too much. It turned really cold today, it's been around -5 to 5 the last week or two. The high today was about -2 and when I left for work it was -22 and when I got home from work it was -31! It takes your breath away to breathe the air and it makes it hard for the car to start.

I've been out hunting alot and haven't had too much luck. One morning I went out I just happened to run into a fox coming down a path, it saw me and started to run and I shot it with a .22. It seemed to have good sign (fur and bloodtrail) but I tracked it for a ways and kicked it up once, and then it went into a den. I then figured I had better get a bigger gun if a .22 wouldn't even kill a fox quickly. So for my birthday, anniversary, and christmas present Charity let me get a Savage model 24 with a .222 over a 20 gauge. It's a pretty neat gun and I'm waiting for the scope mount to come in so I can put a scope on it. It has peep sights on it right now and I can hit a 1" bulls eye with it at 60 yards so now I just need to find something to test it on...
